🙅🏼For the LOVE of GOD STOP using Instagram (& Facebook) 🙅🏼

Instagram is trying to be the worst app possible, and they're winning.

About 5 years ago our economy became data driven. In America this means that you no longer have any real privacy whenever you access the internet.

Instagram recently updated their terms of use. This new TOU basically gives them free reign to do whatever they want. They can check your call logs, go through your contact list, and use your cameras (which they refer to as their cameras btw) and your messages. These are extremely loosely defined terms in a terms of service. They can lock your account if your username sounds like anything like a domain name - which is a far reaching clause that can impact almost anyone if your username sounds like a name of a website.

When you use Instagram you acknowledge that you can never sue them and that they can do whatever they want with your pictures.

Instagram and Facebook have been data mining people for years. They record and track your personal information, then use and sell that personal information to third parties without your knowledge or consent. Basically they're data mining your information, to sell that information, to give you better ads, to sell you shit, (and manipulate you), but also at the same time they're getting rid of likes to "promote mental health" ??? Like Instagram gives a fuck.

This new terms of use update (that went into effect Dec. 20th) also sucks for content creators. These new terms means that, Instagram doesn't own your content, but they have all the same rights as the original creator. So when you post something to Instagram you can no longer sell that media with an exclusive license because you would be violating that license. (You cannot sell your images under and exclusive license because you are not longer the only one with exclusive rights to your work). They also reserve the right to sell your content to a third party without compensating you.

So if you run a photography page on Insta you no longer have exclusive rights to those images. Instagram now has the same rights as you and can sell it without notifying you, or compensating you.

Also Instagram stores your photos after its deleted (just like Facebook), for up to 6 months. Instagram is great for offering your content exposure but it comes at a price.

So what can you do about this?

  1. Delete your account. When you delete your account with Instagram, the license you give Instagram will end. (and you now have exclusive rights to your work again).
  2. If you don't wanna delete your account you can, Opt out of Arbitration and preserve your right to a jury trial if you ever wanted to sue Instagram.
  3. Revoke Instagram's access to your microphone and camera.
  4. Artists, Put Watermarks on all of your Work that you post to Instagram.
    • This will make it harder for them to try and resell your work to a third party.
  5. Log Off while you're not using it.
    • When you leave FB or Instagram logged in it's running the background and tracking your data.
  6. Turn Off Background App Refresh. This will turn off the apps "running in the background." Turning this off will also help save battery life and data.
  7. Turn Off Your Location
  8. Turn Off Activity Status on Facebook on Instagram
    • Go to Settings>Privacy and Security>Activity Status
  9. Control Who Can See Your Content
    • There are a lot of privacy settings you should go through and become familiar with so you can control who is seeing what you post
  10. Do NOT use Messenger - or What's App to send messages
    • Facebook has hired several hundred people to LISTEN to Messenger recordings. Signal is a good replacement for both Messenger and What's App. Your information and messages are encrypted.

 DELETE YOUR SHIT.
or go through and update all of your privacy settings
and STOP LETTING COMPANIES
STEAL YOUR DATA AND YOUR WORK.

If you feel so inclined you can VOTE for candidates that give a fuck about data privacy or call/email/etc to get their attention. If the Zuckerberg testimony taught you anything, its that our politicians don't know DICK about internet privacy and its kind of a huge violation of our privacy rights to just not do anything about it.
