Women Are Cycle Beings and It's About Time We Acted Like it

Just like how men are run on daily cycles (like the sun), women run on cyclical cycles (like the moon). Women don’t have the same energy or mental capacity every day, the daily cycle doesn’t work for us.

Like most problems, you can thank the patriarchy for creating this system that doesn’t work for half of it’s participants. Women were never meant to live on a daily cycle. The best way for women to thrive in life is to live by their cycle (with the moon). Yes — I understand it sounds kind of hokey but it is in fact true in a matter of science and health. You don’t have to be a scientist to know that the moon phases affects our bodies. Ask any police officer or hospice nurse about full moons. The energy is very real.

A woman’s cycle goes through 4 phases.

  1. Menstrual — This is when you are bleeding. Your energy levels are LOW, do not strain yourself and only participate in leisure activities. This is your time to rest. Eat healthy foods such as, watermelon, cucumber, dark chocolate, and ginger tea. Magnesium is known to reduce period symptoms although, Magnesium can be TOXIC if overdone. Be very careful with this, and always consult your doctor about supplements.
  2. Follicular — This is when you are feeling your best. Can be described as “glowing.” You’re probably feeling very strong. You have heightened senses and your brain is high functioning at this time. Estrogen is off the charts, your skin is strong and plump, you have increased sexual desire, and discharge resembles “egg-whites.” You have an increase in energy (and happiness). This is a good time to do a high energy workout, and go out and socialize.
  3. Ovulation — Fertility levels are high, and estrogen is increased. Once an egg is released it is only viable for about a day. This is a good time to do cardio and move your body. Eat light foods. Communication is at its best at this time.
  4. Luteal — This is when the egg starts to travel down the fallopian tube. Your body temperature usually rises about 1 degree during this time. This is where the symptoms of PMS come in NOT the menstrual phase. You are feeling moody, irritated, anxious, fatigued, bloated. Have tender breasts, acne, and changes in appetite. This is not a time to exercise, it’s time to practice leisure activities. Avoid high-carb foods and sugars. Brain power is not good at this time and anxiety is high. This is (in my opinion) the worst part of the cycle.

Then the cycle repeats back to the menstrual phase. The dates for these phases vary with every woman. It’s important to know what phase you’re in in order to live in accordance with your cycle — (If you are an avid gym goer you might already be aware of this).

There are many ways you can track your cycle, there are some really good apps (although because of Roe v. Wade being overturned courts can gather your period app information and in some fucked up places like Texas, they can use this information to falsely imprison you) so… do with that information what you will. There are also a lot of cute period journals that can be found online. Just be careful, it’s dangerous to be a woman these days…

When you finally start living in accordance to your cycle, your life will just get so much easier. Women are cyclical beings and it’s about time we started acted like it. Our bodies and minds will thank us. It is to our own detriment to ignore what our bodies are telling us. When it is time for you to rest, rest. You will grow to understand your body better as well.

Living in accordance to your cycle is like getting onto a train with freshly oiled tracks. It’ll just go so much smoother.
